Denton police arrested a 26-year-old allegedly intoxicated driver Wednesday after a 911 caller reported that the driver of a matching vehicle pointed a gun at him, according to a police report. At about 8:21 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call about a person with a gun in the 1300 block of South Loop 288. The caller alleged that a man in a vehicle pointed a gun at him and his friends and was now driving off. Officers located a vehicle matching the description the caller gave in the 1300 block of Scripture Street. Officers spoke with the driver and said they could smell the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Officers had him exit the vehicle and reported they observed him swaying. The driver allegedly told officers he had two wine coolers a couple of hours before the stop. During standard field sobriety tests, officers report, they observed sufficient clues to believe the man was intoxicated. Officers placed him under arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and searched his vehicle pursuant to his arrest. The report states that officers located three THC vape pens, eight empty and one full BuzzBallz cocktail containers and five empty Fireball Cinnamon Whisky shot bottles. The driver was booked in the city jail on charges of driving while intoxicated with an open alcohol container and possession of a controlled substance between 1-4 grams. Police spokesperson Amy Cunningham said the DWI arrest report did not mention the presence of a firearm and he has not been arrested on any firearm or assault charges. Back at the call location, officers took a statement from the caller. He reported that he was with a couple of friends behind a business, charging his phone, when a man in a vehicle drove up. He said the man aggressively asked why they were there. The reporting party told officers the man pointed something at him, which he originally thought was a phone. However, one of his friends said that it was a gun. The two friends ran away from the scene and did not return to provide statements. He told officers he would like to press charges if officers establish probable cause or locate another suspect. Roundup From 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, the Denton Police Department handled 430 service and officer-initiated calls and made 13 arrests.
